Continuing Education Credit Information

This seminar is open to the public. It has been approved by the Ohio Supreme Court Commission on CLE for 6.5 general CLE hours for attorneys.

The Ohio Department of Insurance has approved this course for 6.5 continuing education hours for title insurance producers.

This course offers 6.5 PDHs to Ohio professional land surveyors and professional engineers to whom the subject matter is professionally relevant. Educators and courses are not subject to preapproval in Ohio.

The American Association of Professional Landmen has approved this event for 6.5 RL, RPL or CPL recertification credits and no CPL/ESA or ethics credits.

Attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the seminar for most individuals who complete the entire event. Attendance certificates not available at the seminar will be mailed to participants within fifteen business days.


Brian P. Barger

Of Counsel, Eastman & Smith, Ltd., in Columbus

Mr. Barger’s practice focuses on environmental, land use, natural resources, regulatory, and zoning law. He has experience representing clients both in court and before administrative agencies such as the Ohio EPA and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Prior work experience includes employment by companies in the mining and gas industries. Mr. Barger is a member of the National Stone Sand & Gravel Association’s Council of Counsels, the Ohio Aggregates and Industrial Minerals Association, the Ohio Farm Bureau’s Healthy Water Ohio work group, the Ohio Forestry Association, the Ohio Water Resources Advisory Group and the American, Ohio State and Columbus Bar Associations.

Nick Cavalaris

Mr. Cavalaris has a demonstrated history of working in the real estate industry. He is skilled in litigation management, dispute resolution, zoning and real estate economics. Mr. Cavalaris has a strong professional background with a JD degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He has comprehensive experience and has represented individuals, businesses and organizations in matters involving land use law including land development, zoning and planning; obtaining entitlement approvals; and litigating real estate-related cases. Mr. Cavalaris was an attorney with Kegler Brown Hill & Ritter and prior to joining that law firm, he was partner at a Columbus zoning and land use law firm, as well as general counsel for privately-held companies engaged in public and private planning, architecture and engineering matters.

Gary Kent

Professional Surveyor with The Schneider Corporation in Indianapolis

Mr. Kent is in his 36th year with The Schneider Corporation, a surveying, GIS and consulting engineering firm based in Indianapolis, and with offices in North Carolina, Florida, Texas and Iowa. He has been chair of both the ALTA and NSPS committees on the Land Title Survey Standards since 1995. Mr. Kent is a past-president of both the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping and the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors, and from 1999-2006 taught boundary law, legal descriptions, property surveying and land survey systems for Purdue University. He has served on the Indiana State Board of Registration for Professional Surveyors since 2004, and he is frequently called as an expert witness in cases involving boundaries, title, easements and surveying practice. Mr. Kent has presented programs on survey and title-related topics and leadership in all 50 states and three times in Europe. He also writes a column for The American Surveyor magazine.

Gregory W. Watts

Director with Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Co., LPA, in Canton

Mr. Watts is a member of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF). He received his B.S. and B.A. degrees from the University of Akron in 2004 and his Juris Doctor degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Akron School of Law in 2007. Mr. Watts is an adjunct professor at the University of Akron School of Law where he teaches Oil and Gas Law. He has published numerous articles in the area of oil, gas and mineral law and is the co-editor of the firm’s Utica Journal Discoveries, an electronic oil and gas newsletter. Mr. Watts’ practice is focused in oil, gas and mineral law, litigation, and business and corporate law. He has been heavily involved in the Utica Shale play in Northeastern Ohio representing clients and counseling energy producers in due diligence associated with mineral and lease acquisitions, and litigating and resolving title, mineral and lease disputes.

Jeremy Young

Shareholder in the law firm of Roetzel & Andress, in Columbus

Mr. Young’s statewide practice is based out of the Columbus office. A member of the firm’s Business Litigation Group, Mr. Young has a broad litigation background, with expertise litigating all manner of business, contract, commercial, corporate, shareholder, securities, and trust/fiduciary issues and disputes. He focuses his practice primarily on real estate-related issues and disputes, particularly those involving easements and eminent domain. Mr. Young helps utility and energy companies looking to expand their infrastructure obtain the necessary property rights with a minimum of expense and delay. He also defends such property rights in disputes with property owners. Additionally, Mr. Young defends businesses affected by road construction projects on a regional and national basis, seeking to prevent the taking of his clients’ property and/or to maximize his clients’ monetary recovery from the government. He also has considerable expertise in the areas of zoning and land use, property tax appeals, and commercial foreclosures. Mr. Young regularly serves as faculty in continuing legal education seminars on eminent domain and easement issues and is consistently voted by his peers as an “Ohio Super Lawyers-Rising Star.” He also holds an AV® Preeminent™ rating from Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, which is the publication’s highest peer review rating for legal ability and ethical conduct.
