This seminar offers a non-credit continuing education opportunity to contractors. It has not been approved by any state contractor licensing entity for continuing education approval.

E. Allen Dunn, III, Ph.D., P.E.

Lead Foundation Engineer, M&S Engineering LLC

Mr. Dunn is a licensed professional engineer with over 20 years of civil engineering and related experience specializing in geotechnical engineering, pavement engineering, forensic and structural engineering, construction materials engineering and testing, and electrical transmission engineering. He is licensed in multiple states and his experience includes projects throughout the contiguous United States. Mr. Dunn has worked for commercial, governmental, military, and private clients. He earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering and an M.B.A. degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Mr. Dunn earned his Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University.

Course Title: Shallow Foundation Design and Construction

Delivery Method: Live 

Course Description: This 6.5 hour live lecture presentation examines building site evaluations for shallow foundations, shallow foundation types and design considerations, bearing capacity and settlement, foundations on difficult sites, and shallow foundations for retaining walls.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to describe the elements of a building site evaluation for a shallow foundation, including site exploration, subsurface exploration, laboratory soil testing, and design soil profile.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to differentiate shallow foundation types, describe design considerations, discuss and determine bearing capacity, and explain settlement considerations for clay soils and granular soils.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify considerations for designing and constructing shallow foundations for retaining walls, including global stability and the impact of soil pressure.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify and implement strategies for designing and constructing shallow foundations on difficult soils.
