Speakers:

Mr. Chuck Cousino

Mr. Chuck Cousino is the onsite wastewater treatment system coordinator at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. He earned a bachelors of science degree in Environmental Health from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, and is a registered environmental health specialist. Mr. Cousino has spent his entire career working in the onsite wastewater industry. The majority of his experience came from almost 25 years as a project manager at a civil engineering firm in Southeast Michigan were he gained extensive experience in site/soils evaluations, alternative onsite wastewater system design and the operation and maintenance of residential and small-scale wastewater treatment systems. Mr. Cousino is a former chair of the Michigan Onsite Technical Advisory Council. He is a former president of the Michigan Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association, the Colorado Professionals in Onsite Wastewater and the national association of State Onsite Regulators.

Dr. Sara Heger

Dr. Sara Heger is an engineer, researcher, and instructor in the Onsite Sewage Treatment Program in the Water Resources Center and is an adjunct assistant professor in the Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota. For over 20 years, she has been conducting research and providing education and technical assistance to homeowners, small communities, onsite professionals and local units of government regarding onsite wastewater treatment. Dr. Heger has presented in over 30 states and provinces regarding the design, installation and management of septic systems and related research. She is president-elect of the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association and is the education chair of the Minnesota Onsite Wastewater Association. Dr. Heger serves on the NSF International Committee on Wastewater Treatment Systems. She is also the chair of the Minnesota State Advisory Committee on Decentralized Systems. Dr. Heger has a BS degree in Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering and MS and PhD degrees in Water Resource Science

Course Title: Septic System Design, Construction, and Maintenance.

Delivery Method: Live

Course Description: This is a 6.0 hour live lecture presentation with the instructors and students together in the same room. It will be conducted in a handicap-accessible conference room with ample seating space and writing surface for all attendees. Bound written materials, authored by the faculty, will be distributed to all participants at the program. Attendance will be monitored and reported to AIA/CES. This course covers the development of onsite wastewater treatment technologies and regulations, evaluating sites and setting treatment goals and conventional system design, alternative and sustainable treatment technologies, and management programs for nosite wastewater treatment systems.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify and describe the factors for selecting and sizing an appropriate septic system site.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to assist in the development of management programs for onsite wastewater treatment, including the monitoring of systems, maintenance plans, inspection and troubleshooting, and repair options.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe the technology and operation of conventional wastewater treatment systems and will be able to identify and discuss their problems and recent scientific and technical advances.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify and explain alternative and sustainable wastewater treatment technologies, including aerobic treatment units, media filters, constructed wetlands, and drip dispersal.
