This seminar is open to the public and offers 6.5 PDHs to Georgia professional engineers and 6.5 Public Protection PDUs to Georgia architects. Educators and courses are not subject to preapproval in Georgia.

Mr. Biller is a faculty lecturer at the University of North Carolina Charlotte in the undergraduate program for fire and safety engineering technology and the graduate program in fire protection and safety management. He teaches an array of courses including fire and building codes, fire behavior and fire dynamics, human behavior in fire, fire protection systems and hydraulics, fire modeling and performance-based aspects of fire protection engineering design, fire prevention and public fire protection public policy.
Mr. Biller is also owner and principal fire protection engineer of Emerson Graham + Associates, a fire protection engineering and code consultancy firm, and he is technical director of AEGIS, a fire door and barrier management inspection agency. Mr. Biller holds registration as a professional fire protection engineer in multiple states including Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and New York. Additionally, he is an NFPA-Certified healthcare life safety specialist healthcare facility manager (CLSS-HC) and a certified fire protection specialist (CFPS). Mr. Biller holds the master code professional (MCP), certified building official (CBO), and certified fire official (CFO) certifications from ICC. He is a professional member of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers (ASHE), a professional member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), and a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), currently serving on four technical committees. He is a 2014 graduate of the MSc. Fire Protection Engineering program at California Polytechnic State University and a 2007 undergraduate of the BSc. Engineering Technology program at Old Dominion University.

Course Title: Complying with Fire and Building Codes

Course Description: This 6.5 hour live lecture presentation examines fire protection and life safety codes, occupancy classifications, means of egress and fire protection features and equipment.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify life safety and building codes which require fire protection and fire resistance features, including the International Fire Code and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes, and will know which codes apply to specific projects.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to define building occupancies and identify how changes of use and occupancy affect fire protection requirements.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to comply with requirements for fire protection features and equipment, including fire-resistant building materials, fire and smoke protection features, fire detection and alarm systems and sprinkler systems.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe fire and building code requirements for exit access and discharge for different types of building occupancies, and will be able to comply with requirements for both number of exits, and exit arrangement.
