Speakers:

Faith Appelquist

Owner of Tree Quality in St Paul, Minnesota

Ms. Appelquist specializes in tree evaluation and management, appraisals, risk assessment and landscape design. She earned a Food Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Landscape Design degree from Dakota County Technical College. Ms. Appelquist serves on the board of the Minnesota and Nursery Landscape Association. She is an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) board certified master arborist, an American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) registered consulting arborist and a qualified tree risk assessor. Ms. Appelquist is married and has two grown daughters. She has traveled extensively throughout the world. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, gardening, cooking and reading.

Manuel Jordán

Owner, Heritage Shade Tree Consultants and Partner of Plant Health Doctors

Mr. Jordán has experience working locally as city forester (various cities), at the state level for the Texas Forest Service and internationally in Spain, England and Mexico. He is an ISA certified arborist, an ISA test proctor, has a tree risk assessment qualification, is a founding member of the ISA Hispanic Committee, and is chair of the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture (MSA) Tree Valuation Committee. Currently, Mr. Jordán is a board member for the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF) and a member of the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) Education & Certification Committee.

Course Title: Trees in the Urban Environment

Course Description: This seven-hour live lecture presentation examines tree biology and health, the functions and benefits of trees, strategies for trees to thrive (not just survive), trees as design elements, and tree protection from pests, disease, and other threats.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the basics of tree biology and health, including site selection, soil conditions and climate.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify the many functions of trees, including carbon sequestration, air filtration, passive cooling, wind breaking, erosion control, human and wildlife habitat, and aesthetic enhancements.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to avoid unsustainable tree design practices in urban environments.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to implement realistic tree protection plans in construction areas and identify and describe the threats that trees face in urban environments, including effects of heat island impacts, poor tree selection for development sites, climate change, lack of species diversity, pests, and disease.
