Bill Simpson, PE

Engineered Earth Solutions, LLC

Mr. Simpson is a geotechnical structure design specialist at Engineered Earth Solutions, LLC. He has designed and reviewed shop drawings for construction and repair of earth structures in the public and private sectors in all 50 states, and he consistently works on more than 1,200 projects and 10 million square feet each year. He performs site visits for new project reconnaissance, construction verification, and construction assistance. Mr. Simpson manages, supervises, instructs, and mentors a team of staff engineers to ensure strict deadlines are met for construction schedules while maintaining design and analysis accuracy. He works with owners, site designers, and contractors to provide designs which are not only structurally sufficient but also financially responsible. Mr. Simpson earned his B.S.C.E. and M.S.C.E. degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Course Title: Soil Mechanics, Slope Stabilization, Failures, and Repairs.

Course Description: This 6.5 hour live lecture presentation covers soil mechanics and classification, slope stability analysis, reinforced slope stability analysis, slope instability prevention, earth structure failures and fixes, and site layout.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the importance of recognizing soil properties and the need to having soils investigated before undertaking site development, particularly on sloped terrain.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss fundamental soil characteristics and slope instability, explain strategies to improve or restore stability with construction practices, use of vegetation, and engineered slopes.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify types of slopes and distinguish types of instability, and discuss reinforced slope stability calculations, geosynthetic materials and alternatives used to achieve stability .

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify methods to prevent slope failures, recognize potential problems in the field, and identify potential causes of problems or failures,
